Compositional Technique - Framing
Framing is a compostional technique that utilizes foreground object to create a new frame within the photographic frame. The use of framing helps to draw our eye and attention to the main subject of the photograph. Framing is a powerful tool to enhance the composition of your photograph.
1. Vocabulary for Framing
For this vocabulary exercise you will be breaking into groups of 5. Each student will be selecting on of the following terms to create a Verbal Visual Word Association(VVWA).
To create a VVWA you will take a piece of paper, fold it in half horizontally, then in half vertically. While it it still folded dog ear the inside center corner. When you unfold this should create a diamond in the center with four other quadrants. You will need to fill out the following information for your vocabulary term.
Once you have completed your card share out with your group so that you all have a good understanding of all of the words. Then we will discuss as a class.

3. Create an Inspiration Gallery
Create an inspiration gallery with at least 10 images. Include and label each of the following framing techniques: Context, Depth, Intrigue,and Leading the eye. Make sure to include a link that has the photo credit/website link for each image.

- Center Diamond - The Word (create a visual mnemonic)
- Top Left - Definition of the Word
- Top Right - Image that reminds you of the definition

- Reuters - Use the right arrow to navigate.
- National Geographic Photo of the Day - Use the previous day button in the top left to browse back in time. Look in other photo galleries as well.
- CNN 25 photos of the week- look for images that use framing.
- This is colossal Photography blog - Scroll through the post looking for framing.
Photoshop Tip to Annotate your Framing Images
1. First collect, save, post and add the web links to your inspiration gallery prior to going int Photoshop.
2. Launch Photoshop - If there is not an icon on the desktop, then go to the start menu and type in Photoshop.
3. Add a new layer. There are two easy ways to add a new blank layer.
4. Select the Brush tool from the Tools palette on the left (it is the 8th icon that looks like a paint brush or hit B on the keyboard to switch to the brush tool)
5. Change the size of the Brush - use the Left bracket key [ to make the brush smaller. Use the right bracket key ] to make the brush bigger.
6. Set the foreground color. Click on the front color at the bottom of the the Tool palette. A window will pop up, select a color.
7. To draw a straight line click and release(this creates a dot), hold the Shift key and click at the next point. 2 points make a straight line.
8. If you make a mistake use CNRL Z to un do the last move. If it is multiple moves use step backwards --- CNRL+ALT+Z
9. Save as a jpg and post with the other image in the gallery.
