Depth of Field
1. Vocabulary
For this vocabulary exercise you will be breaking into groups of 5. Each student will be selecting on of the following terms to create a Verbal Visual Word Association(VVWA).
To create a VVWA you will take a piece of paper, fold it in half horizontally, then in half vertically. While it it still folded dog ear the inside center corner. When you unfold this should create a diamond in the center with four other quadrants. You will need to fill out the following information for your vocabulary term.
Once you have completed your card share out with your group so that you all have a good understanding of all of the words. These vocabulary words are really the building blocks for the rest of the term.
- Depth of Field
- Equivalent Exposure
- Iris
- Focal Point
- Bokeh

2. Exploring Depth of Field
For this assignment you will be using the Internet to learn and see more about Depth of Field. Log on to the computer and open Chrome. Type the web address http://www.steeletraining.com/tutorials/dof/index.html. Pay close attention to the images and the illustrations. On your website create a section/page for Depth of Field and Post the answers to the following questions in complete sentences.
- Why is depth of field the opposite of blurry background?
- What are the three elements that affect Depth of Field?
- When looking at the images of the guitars, what do you observe and why is it happening?
- When creating a portrait, in what way can shallow depth of field hinder the photo?
- Explain how foreground objects can be removed by shallow depth of field?
3. Create a Shallow & Expansive Depth of Field Inspiration Gallery
Create two inspiration galleries, one for Shallow and one for Expansive Depth of Field. Each collection must have a minimum of 10 strong examples. In the caption of each image copy and paste the web address for the original images.
Also write a few sentences that explain what each type of Depth of Field is, how it is created in the camera, and what the visual effect is that we should see in the image.

4. Using Depth of Field - Technical Shooting Assignment
The idea of this project is to teach you how to control the depth of field by selecting certain F-Stops. Here how to do the exercise:
· Create a group of 2 students, You will be sharing a camera but doing the assignment individually.
· Set up three objects at the following distances from the camera: one foot, two feet and five feet.
· Set the camera’s focal length to 70mm (zoom in). Make sure that you can still see all three objects within the frame.
· Shoot at the eye level of the objects, avoid pointing down on your subjects.
· Focus on the center object for all of the photographs. Set the A/m switch on the lens to M for Manual.
· Once you are set up and ready to shoot don’t change camera position, objects or focus.
· Using the Basic Daylight Wheel, adjust the wheel for your lighting situation.
· Finally shoot one picture for each of the possible exposure combinations (equivalent exposures) starting from the smallest F-Stop number (5.6) to the largest F-Stop number (32).

Depth of Field Example Slideshow
Your final Images should look something like the following slideshow. Organize and label the images from shallow DOF to expansive DOF, include the F-stop and shutter speed of each image.
