Window Light
Window is another great way to create soft light and create so dramatic lighting. The window will act like a large soft box. It will create soft even light and large reflections in the eyes. Using a reflector is a great way to add some pop to the portrait and create catch lights in the eyes. Window light can even create a direction of light depending of the placement of the subject in relationship to the window.
Shooting Assignment
Window light is a very flexible light. It is a great soft light source, yet is more directional than open shade. For this assignment I want you to shoot a set of images for each of the following directions: Frontal/butterfly, Rembrandt, Split. Within each direction of light shoot a bracket set with no fill to determine the best exposure. Once you have determined the correct exposure for the direction of light, shoot at least 7 images of each of the following fills: White, Silver, Gold, Black. The fill card will soften the shadows and help to create a catch light in the eyes, try both from below and from the side. Experiment with different angles, posing of the model and points of view to create an interesting image. Also have your subject sit and look up to the sky, this will remove even more shadows.
To help with the shoot try the following:
1. Shoot with either the 50 mm
2. Set the camera mode to A
3. Set the f-stop to the 2.8
4. Set the ISO to auto with a max of 3200
5. Set the minimum shutter speed to 100
Add and label your best Window light shot to the Best of Gallery. Also create a gallery with all of you images of Window Light.
