Compositional Technique - Simplicity
Simplicity is a compostional technique that is used to focus the viewers attention on the main subject of the photograph. There are several approaches to creating a simple composition and strengthen the message of your image.
1. Vocabulary for Simplicity
For this vocabulary exercise you will be breaking into groups of 5. Each student will be selecting on of the following terms to create a Verbal Visual Word Association(VVWA).
To create a VVWA you will take a piece of paper, fold it in half horizontally, then in half vertically. While it it still folded dog ear the inside center corner. When you unfold this should create a diamond in the center with four other quadrants. You will need to fill out the following information for your vocabulary term.
Once you have completed your card share out with your group so that you all have a good understanding of all of the words. Then we will discuss as a class.

- Center Diamond - The Word (create a visual mnemonic)
- Top Left - Definition of the Word
- Top Right - Image that reminds you of the definition
- Bottom Left - Analogy/ personal association
- Bottom Right - How it is used in photography
Once you have completed your card share out with your group so that you all have a good understanding of all of the words. Then we will discuss as a class.

3 Create an Inspiration Gallery
Create an inspiration gallery with at least 10 images. Include and label each of the following Simplicity techniques: move in close, uncomplicated background, or shallow depth of field. Make sure to include a link that has the photo credit/website link for each image.
4. Simplicity Shooting Assignment
Shoot at least 20 examples that utilize the Simplicity technique.
1. Choose 5 different scenes, objects or portraits to photograph.
2. Shoot the first images as you would naturally compose the image with sunny 16 settings.
3. Then try to apply 3 of the different simplicity techniques to improve.
Include and label each of the following Simplicity techniques: move in close, uncomplicated background, or shallow depth of field. Be creative: find new subjects, move in close, change your angle. Post your work to weebly as a slideshow.
