1. Vocabulary for Shadow
For this vocabulary exercise you will be breaking into groups of 5. Each student will be selecting on of the following terms to create a Verbal Visual Word Association(VVWA).
To create a VVWA you will take a piece of paper, fold it in half horizontally, then in half vertically. While it it still folded dog ear the inside center corner. When you unfold this should create a diamond in the center with four other quadrants. You will need to fill out the following information for your vocabulary term.
Once you have completed your card share out with your group so that you all have a good understanding of all of the words. Then we will discuss as a class.

- Center Diamond - The Word (create a visual mnemonic)
- Top Left - Definition of the Word
- Top Right - Image that reminds you of the definition
- Bottom Left - Analogy/ personal association
- Bottom Right - How it is used in photography

Shadows are not simply a dark mass that borders the light. Rather, shadows are an entity as alive as the light. It is the shadows that shape the light, draw attention to the light, and integrate with the light to produce striking photographic opportunities. If we are to reach our full potential as photographers, we must think as much in terms of mastering the shadows as we do of mastering the light. This article details five uses of shadows in creating dynamic photos. § Contrast and Drama § Focus § Directing the Attention § Revealing Form § Revealing Texture One of the most powerful uses of shadows is for the creation of contrast to produce a dramatic effect. People’s attention is automatically drawn to areas of high tonal contrast. However, tonal contrast can not occur without shadows. Thus, it is the interplay of light and shadows that creates the attention grabbing contrast. An example of this use of shadows would be a dramatic sunset where the sun punches through gaps in the clouds creating areas of light which are surrounded by dark areas where the cloud cover is heavy. Shadow Inspiration Gallery
Create an inspiration gallery with at least 10 images. Make sure to include a link that has the photo credit/website link for each image.
Shadow Shooting Assignment
For this assignment you will be taking 20 images that use the shadow technique. Be creative, try different angle, thing about the surface that the shadow is being cast on and angles that might distort the shadow. Put all images into a slideshow or gallery.
